Kilrush Creek Marina, Kilrush, Co. Clare

Frequently spend up to 30 minutes with the dolphins as permitted by the code of conduct of the Shannon estuary. Vessel design is not optimised, because a shrouded propeller would render the vessel less manoeverable. A naturalist is not always on board.

Sometimes spends more than 15 min with the animals. In the Shannon Estuary 30 minutes is used as maximum time spend with dolphins. The minimum distance of approach is occasionally closer than 100 m. In the rare case when 2 or more boats are watching the minimum distance is not enlarged to 200 m. Operators in the Shannon Estuary must adhere to the Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation's code of conduct.

Dolphins are mostly the target species and that is why approach guidelines and time limits can not always be met. Because they have a sailing ship they can not easily reduce speed or stop. The Shannon Estuary is a marine Special Area of Conservation where it is necessary for the operator to have a permit. Their trips are not targeted at whales and dolphins only.
