La Maddalena National Park, Sardinia.

Instead of organizing boat trips for visitors, this organisation invites people to participate as an ecovolunteer in a research project on Bottlenose Dolphins. This experience takes usually a week and is therefore quite different from the usual whale watch trip. Guidelines cannot always be met because of the type of research carried out.

San Remo, Ligurian Sea Cetacean Sanctuary.
Tethys@tethys.org

Sometimes approaches the animals closer than 100 m respectively 200 m when there is more than 1 boat watching. Guidelines on time spend, speed, swimming (whales) and noise are occasionally not met because of their research. Vessel design is not optimised but risk of injuring animals is minimised through careful manoeuvring by experienced personnel. Tethys is a non-profit NGO for the study and the conservation of the marine environment and is not a commercial whale watch operator. Volunteers can however participate in research on the boat and follow lectures about conservation and research on land.
